How do I choose a portable suction grab bar?
Short answer: fiberglass and acrylic tub or shower enclosures are the ideal surface — and often the only option, since there's no backing behind them to anchor a permanent bar. Confirm the wall is smooth and non-porous, then go as large as it will take: the 4.7" pads on the Single Grip and the Telescoping Grip give the strongest pull, and we recommend them whenever there's room. The Telescoping Grip also extends, for a longer handle area and more placement options. Drop to the Tile Grip (3.7" pads) only when the larger pads won't fit a clear span — 4" tile being the usual reason.
The 10-second smoothness test (do this first)
Tile is the one surface worth checking carefully before you order. Tile that looks flat can still carry a fine texture or a matte grain — enough to break the seal. Three quick checks tell you for certain, and they take longer to read than to do.
-
Drag a fingernail across it
Use the back of your fingernail, lightly, in a few directions. It should glide silently like glass. Any faint rasp, tick, or grain means texture the cups can't seal against — your palm is too soft to feel it.
-
Splash a little water on it
Water should bead and run straight off. If it darkens the surface or soaks in, the tile is porous.
-
Lay a credit card on it
It should sit dead flat with no rocking, and each cup needs a clear span with no grout line crossing it.
Passed all three? You're the exact customer these bars are built for — order with confidence. Not sure after the tests? Send us a photo of your wall at info@bridge-medical.com and we'll tell you honestly before you buy. And if the surface turns out wrong, you can return it within 30 days with no restocking fee — just keep the original packaging so it's resaleable (original and return shipping aren't refunded).
